THREE OLYMPIC GOLDS, NOW TAKING ON A $600B INDUSTRY

How Earthletica builds sustainability without killing margin, talks to the customer’s problem, and turns discipline into a system.

BRONTE CAMPBELL  Co-founder & CEO, Earthletica

Brought to you byShopify Klaviyo

THE TL;DR

  1. Three Olympic golds, then a startup. Bronte Campbell built Earthletica while still racing for Australia.

  2. Within 10% of Lululemon, margin intact. Proof that sustainable does not have to kill your pricing.

  3. Sell the problem, not the mission. The customer-language swap that made a values-led brand convert.

  4. 50% repeat purchase in six months. Built on limited drops and scarcity, not big inventory bets.

  5. Two million minutes to convert one. An athlete’s take on founder discipline as a system, not motivation.

FROM BUSHY

In more than 600 episodes, we’ve had a dentist selling $5,000 gold grills, an avalanche scientist who ended up making breastfeeding products, and enough recovering lawyers to fill a courtroom. But we’d never had an Olympic gold medalist, so when we finally got one, we didn’t settle for a single gold.

Bronte launched Earthletica while at the Paris Olympics. If you’ve ever been told that doing things sustainably means killing your margin, this one will change your mind. We get into how she holds prices within 10% of Lululemon, how limited drops let her test products before scaling, and the gap between a big pile of add-to-carts and an actual sale.

IN HER WORDS

“You get two million minutes to train, and you get one minute to convert it.”

— BRONTE CAMPBELL | EARTHLETICA  44:25

02 THE BIG LESSON

Sell the customer’s problem, not your mission

Earthletica started life as “better for the earth”. It took a year of testing to land somewhere that cuts through. Sustainability clearly matters to Bronte. The lesson is that most customers care about themselves first, and the brands that win lead with that. Here is how she made a values-led product actually sell.

Rule 01 · Performance is the price of entry  21:31

The paper-straw rule: nobody wants plastic straws in the ocean, but we all hate paper ones because they are worse. A sustainable product that performs worse gets bought once for the story and thrown away, which is not sustainable either.

“The performance really has to come first in these products.”

Rule 02 · Use the customer’s own language  24:48

The taglines that landed, “your cleanest sweat yet” and “no saggy leggings”, came from talking to customers and using their words, not the brand’s. Same benefits, rewritten the way the customer actually speaks.

“Most people care about themselves and their health a lot more than they care about what values they’re showing to the world.”

Rule 03 · Build the mission in so it survives a downturn  13:06

Sustainability cannot be the only leg you stand on, because it is the first thing shoppers drop when money is tight. Bronte builds it into the core product and the supply chain so it is a feature, not the whole pitch, and it does not cost the margin.

"It's a really big advantage if you can build these practices in from the start and scale from that, rather than trying to turn a big, unwieldy supply chain around."

03 STEAL THESE TACTICS

  1. Put your taglines next to real customer language from reviews and DMs, and rewrite anything that does not match how they actually talk.  26:00

  2. Test the product with limited drops before you scale. Scarcity by design keeps inventory lean and tells you what is worth developing.  28:05

  3. Make performance non-negotiable on any values-led product, or customers buy once and never return.  21:31

  4. Close the add-to-cart-to-sale gap on new-brand traffic. Work out what extra evidence a first-time visitor needs to convert.  42:34

  5. Schedule recovery and unstructured thinking time as deliberately as the hard work. Bronte blocks two hours of CEO time a week.  45:45

50%

Repeat purchase rate in the first six months. That is the number that told them the product was right.

04 THE STACK

  • Meta - Main paid channel. Started at $10 a day in test campaigns, now focused on closing the add-to-cart-to-sale gap.

  • Shopify - The store, now being reworked with vibe-coded customisation as they move from drops to a full product architecture.

  • Birchal - Equity crowdfunding platform that raised $1.1M from over 400 investors.

  • Techstars - The accelerator Earthletica went through while building the business.

  • YKK - Maker of the recycled, tapeless AiryString zipper Earthletica was first to market with.
